Support Fundamentals: Normal vs Tree
Support settings are a trade-off between three things: holding the overhang in the correct position, leaving an acceptable underside, and allowing the support to be removed without damaging the model. This guide covers the first decisions to make in Bambu Studio: Normal or Tree, Grid or Snug, Slim or Strong or Organic or Hybrid, Threshold angle, and On build plate only.
Normal support vs Tree support

Auto vs manual: Normal (auto) and Tree (auto) detect eligible overhangs automatically. The manual versions generate support only where support enforcers or painted support regions tell them to. Manual does not mean “editable automatic support”; it changes where support is permitted to appear.
Normal support: Grid vs Snug


Choose Grid when…
the underside is broad and flat, the support is tall, or you want a simple stable column under a functional part. It is often robust, but can consume more material and touch more adjacent surfaces.
Choose Snug when…
the overhang outline is irregular, Grid expands into details it does not need to touch, or you want the Normal-style support to follow the model more closely. Preview narrow tips carefully for stability.
Tree support styles
The style changes how aggressively branches merge, how thick and connected they become, and whether a large flat overhang is converted to a conventional grid. The four previews below use the same model so the structural difference is visible.

If the Style field is set to Default, Bambu Studio may choose the effective Tree style based on other process settings. Bambu Lab’s current documentation states that Tree Hybrid is selected when support material or adaptive layer height is enabled; otherwise Tree Organic is selected. Because software behaviour can change, explicitly choose a style when repeatability between saved jobs matters.
Threshold angle: the direction matters

Bambu Studio automatically supports surfaces whose slope is below the selected threshold. Therefore:
- A larger threshold generally creates more support. At 45°, more sloped faces qualify than at 30°.
- A smaller threshold generally creates less support. It limits automatic support to flatter, more difficult overhangs.
- The current documented default is 30°, which Bambu Lab describes as safe for most materials. It is a starting point, not a law.
Cooling, layer height, wall speed, bridge length, material and nozzle size all change what an overhang can print cleanly. A PLA profile with strong cooling may tolerate a different threshold from ABS or a soft TPU. After changing the angle, inspect the first unsupported perimeter of every critical underside in Preview.
When should “On build plate only” be enabled?
When enabled, support may start only on the build plate; Bambu Studio will not place the base of a support structure on top of the model. This can protect visible surfaces and make removal easier, but it does not guarantee that every requested overhang still has a viable path to the bed.

A reliable selection workflow
- Rotate the model first. The best support is often the support you remove through better orientation.
- For a broad mechanical underside, compare Normal Snug, Normal Grid and Tree Hybrid.
- For a figure or curved object, start with Tree Organic; test Slim if material and contact reduction matter, or Strong if branches are tall and heavily loaded.
- Set Threshold angle conservatively, slice, and inspect the Preview layer where each supported surface begins.
- Enable On build plate only only after confirming every critical contact still connects to a stable branch or column.
- Check removal access: a support that slices correctly but cannot be reached with pliers is not a practical support.
