Bambu Studio Settings Explained 03: Advanced Support Settings

BAMBU STUDIO SETTINGS EXPLAINED · 03
Advanced Support Settings

Once the basic support type is correct, the quality of the supported surface is controlled mainly by the gap above the support, the density of the interface, the side clearance, and the material assigned to the interface. These settings are connected: changing only one value can make support easier to remove but leave a rough underside, or improve the underside while welding the support to the part.

This guide continues our Normal vs Tree Supports article and explains the advanced controls that matter most in day-to-day printing.

The central idea: the support base provides strength with relatively little material; the interface is the dense skin immediately next to the model. Tune the base for stability and speed, then tune the interface and separation gaps for surface quality and removal.

Enable Advanced or Expert mode, then open the Support tab. The exact labels and defaults can vary with Bambu Studio version, printer and process preset.

1. Support base vs support interface

Bambu Studio treats support as two different structures:

  • Support/raft base: the main body that carries the load. It can be sparse because it does not normally form the finished underside.
  • Support/raft interface: the dense top or bottom layers directly beside the printed model. This is where separation and supported-surface quality are decided.

The orange structure is the support base; the light-coloured dense layer is the support interface. Here the base remains in the model material while a dedicated support filament is used only at the interface.

For a multi-material printer, using a dedicated support filament only for the interface is usually the efficient starting point. It produces far fewer material changes than printing the entire support structure in the support material.

2. Top Z distance: quality vs removability

Top Z distance is the vertical gap between the top of the support and the underside of the model. It has the largest direct effect on how easily the support separates.

Diagram of Top Z distance and support object XY distance
Top Z distance controls vertical separation. Support/object XY distance controls horizontal clearance beside the model.
Top Z distance Removal Supported underside Best use
Larger Easier More sag and visible lines Same-material support that is fusing to the model
Smaller Harder Flatter and better supported Fine tuning after the support removes cleanly
0 mm May bond permanently with the model material Best geometric support Compatible dedicated or soluble interface material

Bambu Lab’s current common process profiles use 0.2 mm as a typical starting point for same-material support. Treat that as a baseline, not a universal answer: layer height, material adhesion, nozzle size and cooling all matter. If the support is welded on, increase the gap slightly. If the underside is badly sagged and removal is already easy, reduce it one step and test again.

Dedicated support interface: Bambu Lab documents a 0 mm Top Z distance for compatible support-interface filaments. Confirm the material pairing and dry moisture-sensitive support materials before relying on this setting.

3. Bottom Z distance and XY distance

Bottom Z distance is used where support begins on top of the model and the model is underneath the support. Its function mirrors Top Z distance: more gap improves separation; less gap improves support stability.

Support/object XY distance is the horizontal clearance beside vertical or sloping model walls. Increase it if support leaves scratches or fuses to side walls. Reduce it only when the support is too far away to catch a small edge. Bambu Lab’s current common profile uses 0.35 mm as a typical starting value.

Scars on side walls

Increase Support/object XY distance in small steps. Check that narrow supported ledges do not lose coverage.

Support falls away from an edge

Reduce XY distance slightly, strengthen the support body, or paint a more appropriate contact region.

Support begins on a finished surface

Increase Bottom Z distance if it bonds too strongly, or use On build plate only when the geometry still has a valid path to the bed.

4. Interface layers and interface spacing

Top interface layers create a dense roof beneath the model. More layers give the first model lines a flatter and more stable platform, but use additional material and can make removal harder.

Supported underside with zero top interface layers
Zero top interface layers: the first model lines span directly over the sparse support base, so sagging is much more visible.
Supported underside with three top interface layers
Three top interface layers: the denser roof provides a flatter platform for the supported underside.

Bambu Lab’s current common profile uses two top and two bottom interface layers. For a broad cosmetic underside, test three top interface layers before making the support base dramatically denser.

Bambu Studio bottom support interface example
Bottom interface layers stabilise support that starts on top of the model. They are especially relevant when the support itself must establish a reliable first layer on model geometry.

Top interface spacing controls the distance between interface lines. A smaller value creates a denser roof and usually improves the underside. A larger value saves material and improves separation but permits more sag. The current common profile uses 0.5 mm; a value of 0 mm produces a solid interface and is most useful with a compatible dedicated support material.

5. Base and interface patterns

Bambu Studio support base pattern comparison
Support base patterns change strength, material use and removal. Rectilinear is a common Normal-support baseline; Grid and Honeycomb are stronger; Tree support commonly uses a Hollow base.
Lightning and Hollow support base pattern comparison
Lightning is extremely sparse and fast; Hollow contains no internal base infill. Both save material but are less suitable when the support must carry a heavy or tall load.
Pattern Use it when Main trade-off
Rectilinear You want a predictable, economical Normal support Less rigid than Grid or Honeycomb
Rectilinear Grid A large flat overhang needs a strong base More material and harder removal
Honeycomb The support is tall and needs stability in several directions Slower and denser
Lightning / Hollow A Tree support can rely on its shell and branches Lower resistance to heavy loads

Base pattern spacing changes the spacing between support-base lines (or the Honeycomb cell size). Smaller spacing means a denser, stronger base. Pattern angle rotates the pattern; it can be useful when support lines align poorly with a long edge or when removal access favours a particular direction.

Bambu Studio interface pattern comparison
Interface patterns in Preview. Rectilinear is efficient for most parts; Concentric follows curved outlines; interlaced and Grid styles increase rigidity but can be harder to detach.

Choose the interface pattern for the surface rather than for appearance in the Prepare view. Rectilinear is the safe general choice. Concentric can follow curved or non-planar undersides well, especially with a dense dedicated interface. Grid gives excellent rigidity beneath large flat areas but can grip strongly when the model and interface use the same material.

6. Dedicated support material without excessive waste

  1. Load the model filament and the compatible support filament.
  2. Leave Support/raft base as Default so the support body uses the current model material.
  3. Assign the dedicated filament to Support/raft interface.
  4. Use the material manufacturer’s recommended Z gap and interface spacing. For Bambu dedicated support materials, the official profile may automatically set these values.
  5. Slice and inspect Filament change times. Excessive tiny interfaces can create many swaps and a large purge volume.

This approach concentrates the expensive or soluble material where it changes the result. Printing the entire support base with another material is justified only when the material pairing, support strength or machine configuration requires it.

7. Tree-only controls

Branch distance

Smaller spacing samples the overhang more densely, giving more contact points and potentially a better underside. It also creates more support and more removal work.

Branch diameter

A larger initial diameter makes a branch stronger and less likely to wobble, but increases material use and can make removal harder.

Branch angle

A larger angle allows branches to extend more horizontally and route around geometry. Push it too far and long branches may become less stable.

Tree support Max bridge length illustration
Max bridge length lets short bridge sections print without continuous support. Longer bridges are divided so only selected contact points receive tree support.

8. Independent support layer height

When enabled, Bambu Studio can use a support layer height that differs from the model layer height. This can reduce print time on support-heavy models because the support body does not have to copy every fine model layer. The slicer calculates the support layer structure automatically.

Bambu Studio support with independent support layer height disabled
Independent support layer height disabled: support follows the model layer schedule.
Bambu Studio support with independent support layer height enabled
Independent support layer height enabled: the support can use coarser layers while the model retains its selected layer height.

Check the sliced Preview at the interface and at every transition. Saving time is useful only if the interface still lands at the intended Z position and the support remains stable.

9. Automatic support, critical regions and manual painting

  • Support critical regions only reduces automatic support to areas the slicer identifies as structurally important. It can save material, but it is not a substitute for checking every unsupported island.
  • Remove small overhangs suppresses support beneath small areas that may print acceptably on their own. Disable it if a small but important detail repeatedly curls or fails.
  • Don't support bridges / Max bridge length allows genuinely bridgeable spans to print without unnecessary support. The correct limit depends heavily on material, cooling and span direction.
  • Support painting is the best tool when the automatic result is mostly correct but one visible face, internal cavity or tiny island needs a specific decision. Paint enforcers where support is required and blockers where automatic support causes damage or cannot be removed.

10. Symptom-to-setting troubleshooting

Symptom First settings to inspect Reason
Rough, drooping underside Reduce Top Z distance; add top interface layers; reduce interface spacing The first model lines need a closer, denser platform
Support welded to underside Increase Top Z distance; increase interface spacing; verify material profile The separation gap or material contrast is insufficient
Side-wall scars Increase Support/object XY distance The support is contacting the model laterally
Tall support shakes or collapses Reduce base spacing; use Grid/Honeycomb; enlarge tree branch diameter; use Strong style The support body lacks stiffness
Too many filament swaps Use support material only for the interface; reduce tiny painted regions Every isolated interface can introduce extra tool changes and purging
Unnecessary support everywhere Revisit orientation and Threshold angle; use blockers or manual support The automatic eligibility rule is broader than the model requires

A safe tuning order

  1. Orient the model and choose Normal or Tree correctly.
  2. Confirm the support base is stable.
  3. Set the correct interface material.
  4. Tune Top Z distance for removability.
  5. Tune interface layers and spacing for underside quality.
  6. Adjust XY and Bottom Z distances only where contact scars appear.
  7. Use support painting for local exceptions.
  8. Print a small representative test and change one variable at a time.
Do not optimise from the settings panel alone. Use Preview to inspect the first model layer above the interface, the support path beside finished walls, the number of material changes, and whether every support can physically be removed after printing.
