Wall Generator: Classic vs Arachne

Wall Generator decides how Bambu Studio converts the perimeter of a model into printable extrusion lines. It does not merely change the order of the walls: it can change line width, wall count, gap fill, seams, small-feature survival and even the dimensions of a thin feature.

The short answer is simple: Classic uses essentially constant extrusion widths and adds gap fill where required; Arachne varies extrusion width to fit the geometry. The useful answer is knowing when that difference helps—and what to inspect before pressing Print.

Where to find it: open the Quality tab, locate Wall generator, then enable Advanced or Expert settings to see the Arachne controls. Available defaults can differ by printer, nozzle and process profile, so do not assume one generator is universal across every preset.

What the sliced paths actually look like

At seams and changing wall thicknesses, Arachne can redistribute material over neighbouring paths. Classic keeps the programmed widths more uniform, which can make the transition easier to predict but may require a separate fill path.

Thin or isolated geometry is where the choice becomes most visible. Arachne may preserve a feature by producing a printable line at an adjusted width; Classic may simplify the region differently or leave gap fill to complete it.

The Arachne controls, in plain language

These controls work together. Changing one value can alter where walls split or join, so treat them as a system and test one change at a time.

Minimum feature size

Features below this threshold may be ignored. Features above it but still narrower than the minimum wall width can be expanded to the minimum printable width. It is expressed as a percentage of nozzle diameter.

Minimum wall width

Sets the narrowest wall Arachne is allowed to generate for a thin feature. Too small can produce unreliable extrusion; too large can fatten delicate geometry.

Wall transition threshold angle

Controls how readily the slicer introduces wall-count transitions in tapered or changing-width regions. Lower values restrict the transition region; higher values allow width adaptation over a broader part of the geometry.

Wall transition length

Sets how much distance is available for a wall to split or merge. More length generally makes the width change smoother; too much can spread the dimensional effect farther than intended.

Wall distribution count

Controls how many neighbouring walls share the width adjustment. A low count concentrates the change near the centre; a higher count distributes it across more walls, potentially including visible outer walls.

Wall transitioning filter margin

Filters very short or frequent transitions. A larger margin can reduce start–stop events and tiny travel moves, but permits larger width variation in the transitions that remain.

Do not copy a “magic” group of Arachne numbers from another printer. The safe range depends on nozzle diameter, material flow calibration, layer height and the model. Start with the printer’s supplied process profile, change only the setting linked to the defect you can see, and verify it in Preview.

When Arachne is usually the better test

  • Embossed or engraved text whose strokes are close to one nozzle width.
  • Tapered walls, ribs and decorative surfaces with continuously changing thickness.
  • Models where Classic leaves many tiny gap-fill segments between perimeter walls.
  • Single-part shells where keeping a narrow feature matters more than keeping every line at the nominal width.

When Classic is often the safer starting point

  • Dimensionally calibrated mechanical parts already validated under Classic.
  • Parts where a predictable wall count or highly consistent exterior extrusion matters more than preserving very thin details.
  • Models where Arachne creates visible surface waviness, unexpected seams or over-filled narrow corners.
  • Production work: if the approved sample was sliced with Classic, changing generators is a process change and should be re-tested.

A practical five-minute comparison

  1. Duplicate the plate or save a copy of the process preset.
  2. Slice once with Classic and once with Arachne without changing any other setting.
  3. In Preview, inspect Line Width, Feature Type and the layer-by-layer walls around thin details.
  4. Check the seam, floating islands, tiny gap-fill paths, print time and material use.
  5. Print a small representative section before committing a large or dimensional part.
Decision shortcut: choose Arachne when the model contains useful geometry that fixed-width paths cannot fit cleanly. Choose Classic when consistency and a previously proven wall structure matter most. If both previews look correct, use the one that produces the cleaner seam and fewer awkward micro-paths for that specific model.
