What TCT Asia 2026 Revealed About the Next Stage of 3D Printing

From individual printers to complete production systems
TCT Asia 2026 ran from 17–19 March at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai. The official event material described more than 550 solution providers across over 50,000 square metres, while the post-event report recorded 44,519 visitors. Scale alone is not the most important point: the show demonstrated how quickly additive manufacturing is becoming a connected production workflow.
The strongest theme was not simply “faster printers”. Exhibitors placed machines alongside software, material handling, inspection, post-processing and application examples. That shift matters because repeatable manufacturing depends on the entire chain.
1. Metal additive manufacturing continues to scale
Large-format metal systems, higher laser counts and more production-oriented powder workflows were highly visible. Chinese manufacturers including BLT, Farsoon, E-Plus 3D, HBD and UnionTech appeared alongside global software, standards and automation companies. Electron-beam melting and binder jetting also featured in new-product discussions, broadening the conversation beyond laser powder-bed fusion.
The inference for end users is straightforward: metal AM is being designed around throughput and validated applications, not only one-off demonstration parts. Aerospace and medical remain important, but tooling, energy, automotive and industrial spares are increasingly central to the business case.
2. Automation is becoming part of the printer
Automated build preparation, monitoring, material handling and inspection reduce the amount of expert intervention required per job. AI-assisted design and process monitoring were also prominent in the summit programme. The useful applications are practical: detecting anomalies, suggesting orientations, optimising support, tracking build data and connecting design decisions with inspection results.
“AI” does not eliminate process knowledge. It becomes valuable when it makes a controlled workflow easier to repeat and audit.
3. Application proof matters more than a specification sheet
The conference tracks covered healthcare, aerospace, consumer goods, moulds, architecture, design and automotive production. This application focus reflects a mature question: not “can this shape be printed?” but “can the whole process meet cost, quality, traceability and delivery requirements?”
For desktop and workshop users, the same principle applies at a smaller scale. A fast machine is valuable only when the material profile, bed adhesion, slicing, operator routine and finishing process produce the same acceptable part repeatedly.
4. Materials and post-processing remain decisive
New polymers, metals and composite systems expand what can be printed, but each material brings storage, drying, safety, shrinkage, support and finishing requirements. Surface treatment, depowdering, heat treatment and inspection were part of the production story rather than afterthoughts.
This is a useful reminder for FDM and resin users: the part is not finished when the machine stops. Support removal, washing, curing, sanding, inserts, coating and dimensional checks should be included when comparing cost and lead time.
5. Scanning-to-print workflows are becoming more accessible
Metrology, 3D scanning and digital-repair workflows connect physical parts with additive manufacturing. They can speed up fit checks, custom products, figurines, reverse engineering and replacement components. A scan is not automatically a production-ready CAD model: it may still need mesh repair, simplification, surfacing, tolerancing and permission from the original rights holder.
What this means for Australian businesses and makers
- Choose a workflow, not just a machine. Include software, material supply, training, maintenance and finishing in the decision.
- Start with a measurable application. Lead time, tooling cost, weight reduction, spare-part availability or custom fit creates a stronger case than novelty.
- Keep production data. Profiles, material batches, orientation and inspection results help turn a successful print into a repeatable process.
- Use the right scale. Desktop FDM may be ideal for fixtures and prototypes, resin for fine detail, and an external industrial service for certified metal work.
- Expect hybrid manufacturing. Printing will often complement machining, moulding, casting and fabrication rather than replace them.
The next event to watch
TCT Asia’s 2026 programme continues with the Shenzhen event in October.
