How to Prepare a 3D Model for an Accurate 3D Printing Quote

A quote is only as accurate as the information behind it
Custom 3D printing prices depend on more than the model’s outside dimensions. Material volume, support, orientation, machine time, finishing, failure risk and quantity can all change the cost. A clean file and a short project brief help us quote quickly and avoid surprises after production begins.
1. Confirm units, scale and final dimensions
STL files do not reliably carry a unit, so a model created in millimetres can be interpreted as inches—or vice versa. Include at least one known overall dimension in your request and open the exported file in a slicer or viewer before uploading it. If several parts must fit together, state which dimensions and clearances are critical.
2. Check that the model is printable
- Closed geometry: the model should describe a watertight solid without open edges, duplicate faces or self-intersections.
- Wall thickness: thin walls and tiny pins may be below the practical limit of the selected material and process.
- Separate bodies: identify parts that should move, remain separate or be permanently joined.
- Fine details: engraved text, holes and grooves need enough width and depth to survive slicing and finishing.
Commonly useful formats include STL and 3MF for print-ready meshes, OBJ for models that need mesh or colour information, and STEP for CAD geometry. The best format depends on the job, so ask if the design contains assemblies, colour or precise mechanical features.
3. Describe the end use
Tell us whether the part is a visual prototype, figurine, enclosure, jig, outdoor component, heat-exposed part or functional assembly. This guides material and process recommendations. Include expected temperature, UV exposure, impacts, flexing, chemicals and loads.
Safety-critical, medical, food-contact, pressure-containing and regulated applications need to be identified before quoting. A printed prototype should not be treated as a certified production component unless testing and certification have been separately arranged.
4. State tolerances and fit requirements
“Must fit” is more useful when accompanied by a target. For mating parts, tell us whether the fit should be loose, sliding, press-fit or threaded. Nominally identical holes and shafts will not normally fit without clearance, and the best allowance depends on the printer, material, orientation and finishing method.
Mark only genuinely critical dimensions. Requiring tight tolerance everywhere can increase production and inspection cost without improving the part.
5. Choose appearance and finish priorities
Every process leaves evidence of manufacturing. FDM parts show layer lines and may have a seam or support marks; resin parts require support removal and curing. Tell us which face is most visible and whether you need standard print finish, careful support placement, sanding, assembly, inserts, painting or another post-process.
Colour names and screen images are approximate. If colour matching is important, provide a physical reference or recognised colour standard and discuss feasibility before production.
6. Include quantity and deadline
One prototype and fifty production parts may use different orientations, machines or nesting strategies. Provide the total quantity, whether partial delivery is useful, and the date the parts are actually needed. Rush production may be possible, but should be confirmed before relying on it.
7. Add photos or context
A photograph of the mating component, a marked-up screenshot or a simple assembly diagram can answer questions that are unclear in the mesh. Do not send sensitive material that is unnecessary for the quote.
8. Protect confidential and third-party designs
Only submit files you own or have permission to reproduce. Check any downloaded model’s licence, including attribution and non-commercial restrictions. Fashion3D treats customer files as private order materials and does not use an identifiable project in marketing without prior permission.
