Bambu Lab R1 Is Coming in September: What We Know So Far

Bambu Lab has begun teasing the R1 Laser Engraver & Cutter, describing it as its first laser engraver and cutter and saying it is coming in September. That is the important confirmed news. Most of the specifications people naturally want to know—laser power, work area, enclosure design, Australian price and exact release date—have not yet been published.

Short version: R1 is real, it is a laser engraving and cutting product, and Bambu Lab is positioning it as another part of its personal-manufacturing ecosystem. Everything beyond that should be treated as unconfirmed until the full launch.

What Bambu Lab has officially confirmed

The official teaser uses the phrase “more power, made simple”. That strongly signals the same ease-of-use direction Bambu Lab has pursued in 3D printing, but it is not a specification. There is not yet enough official information to say whether R1 uses a diode, CO₂ or another laser architecture, or whether it shares modules with the H2 family.

Why R1 could be an important release

The H2 platform proved that Bambu could bring camera-assisted layout, material height measurement, air assist, extraction and safety interlocks into a familiar software-led workflow. A product designed around laser work from the beginning could potentially offer a work area, enclosure, smoke path and accessory system that are less constrained by the geometry of a 3D printer.

The other big question is software. Existing H2 laser workflows use Bambu Suite for spatial alignment and job preparation. If R1 carries that workflow into a dedicated laser product, it may lower the entry barrier for customers who already understand Bambu Studio and Bambu Handy. This is a reasonable expectation based on Bambu’s ecosystem strategy, but it has not yet been formally confirmed for R1.

These are the points worth watching at the full reveal. They will determine whether R1 is aimed mainly at craft users, workshops that cut thicker sheet material, or both.

Bambu Lab’s current laser and cutting options

R1 will not be Bambu Lab’s first experience with laser processing. The company already has a growing set of laser-capable H2 machines. However, there is one important correction: A2L supports blade cutting and pen drawing, not laser engraving.

What the current H2 modules can do

On H2D, Bambu Lab lists both 10W and 40W blue-light modules. The Australian product page specifies a maximum processing area of 310 × 270mm for the 10W module and 310 × 250mm for the 40W module. For basswood plywood, it lists maximum cutting thicknesses of 5mm and 15mm respectively, with maximum engraving speeds of 400mm/s and 1000mm/s. Actual results still depend on material composition, focus, settings, ventilation and the condition of the workpiece.

The established H2 workflow also includes BirdsEye camera alignment, automatic layout, air assist and optional smoke purification. Those features give us a useful checklist for judging R1 when the full specifications arrive.

A safety note before choosing any laser

Laser processing produces heat, smoke and potentially hazardous fumes. The material must be known to be laser-safe, extraction must be suitable for the job, and the machine’s protective enclosure, interlocks and emergency controls must be used exactly as specified. Never laser-process PVC, vinyl or an unidentified plastic. Bambu’s H2 laser documentation distinguishes between the Class 4 laser module itself and the complete protected machine operating as a Class 1 laser product when all protection is correctly installed and working.

Our view

R1 is worth watching because it may bring Bambu Lab’s camera alignment and guided workflow to a purpose-built laser platform. We are most interested in the Australian price, enclosure and extraction design, real cutting depth, usable bed area and whether existing H2 accessories carry over.
